Thunder Announces Industry Group to Improve Advertising Measurement Standards for Brands, Publishers and Consumers

(GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Thunder Experience Cloud, the leader in people-based ad serving, today announced Truth in Measurement (TIM), a new industry group that aims to develop a technical standard for the sharing and measurement of advertising data in a transparent way that protects both consumer privacy and publisher data. The initiative is led by top executives from some of the world’s biggest brands and ad platforms.

One of the major industry issues TIM aims to improve is of ad transparency in the age of consumer privacy and data leakage. Historically, this has made it difficult for advertisers to measure their ads and verify the results. To tackle these challenges, TIM plans to develop a framework for providing ad exposure measurement tied to anonymized IDs for measurement only.

“Publishers can simultaneously protect consumer privacy and provide transparency to advertisers with TIM’s framework of sharing ad exposure data tied to a privacy-conscious ID,” said Victor Wong, CEO of Thunder. “Rather than be a walled garden, you can be a ‘community garden’ to share data while protecting your business model and consumer privacy.”

“TIM’s measurement solution protects data and is transparent for advertisers, publishers and consumers,” said Alysia Borsa, chief data officer at Meredith. “The ability to accurately map measurement is crucial for every industry player and TIM is leading the way in new verification, analytics and attribution.”

At the same time, TIM will focus efforts on enabling people-based measurement. While the industry has been focused on developing channel-specific measurement for several years, there has been a lack of attention around people-based measurement, i.e. tracking ad exposure and conversion by person across channels. Without this type of de-duplicated measurement, it is impossible to know the true ROI of any campaign.

“The need for higher data protection standards and rise of omni-channel advertising campaigns has made it increasingly difficult for advertisers to track, measure and verify the results of various consumer interactions across multiple platforms,” said Vincent Rinaldi, head of addressable media at Hershey’s. “TIM provides a first step to solving a problem numerous stakeholders face – promoting transparency while simultaneously respecting the consumer’s privacy.”

“Some major platforms have begun redacting data such as user IDs they previously provided, and this is something that can no longer occur in the industry,” said Trace Rutland, director of media innovation at Tyson Foods. “We are excited to be partnering with industry leaders on this initiative to encourage advertisers to holistically and accurately measure impact with TIM’s framework.”

Brands, publishers and consumers can rely on TIM to establish a framework that will solve for their different needs.

The path to brand loyalty is no longer a funnel. In fact, there is no set path. When deciding between programmatic creative approaches, advertisers face the marketer’s ‘trilemma’; marketers need to find a balance among personalization, experience, and cost. CEO Victor Wong writes on CMO.com discussing what’s at stake and how to overcome the creative trade-offs.

The majority of advertisers show the same generic, generalized creative to all audiences. A targeted creative strategy requires creating a cohesive story, but in a personalized way. As the world gets smaller, Victor Wong examines why global brands need to start thinking small in their large advertising campaigns.

With the recent founding of the Coalition for Better Ads and Google’s announcement to crack down on intrusive ad formats in 2017, LEAN ads (light, encrypted, ad choice supported, non-invasive ads) are more important than ever before. Victor Wong published a piece on MarTech offering five tips for creating consumer-friendly programmatic ads.

Personalization is critical to boost ad performance, but if marketers use the tactic incorrectly, they could immediately rub customers the wrong way. Victor Wong gives four tips for personalizing ads without being creepy.

To successfully execute cross-platform digital campaigns, different creative messages and variations must be produced to target different audience segments. Yet, two of the industry’s biggest players are falling short of meeting those needs. CEO Victor Wong writes on iMedia discussing how Google and Adobe are failing brand marketers.

Though brands and advertisers have done an excellent job effectively reaching the right people at the right time, most campaigns fail to deliver the right message. In The Makegood’s People of Ad Tech interview, Bill Brazell, WIT Strategy Partner, interviews Victor Wong to discuss why the real problem is the widespread failure to customize ads.

Lastly, Thunder teamed up with its global DSP and programmatic exchange partners to conduct a study on viewability and load times. After studying billions of impressions, they discovered that beyond simply improving the ad experiences for consumers, faster load times dramatically affect viewability rates.

Revising the Display Creative Process: Democratizing Design and Connecting Teams

Thunder creative management platform - display advertising

When it comes to design, $51.8 billion buys surprisingly little love.

What I mean is that despite display being a $51.8 billion market annually, the creative part of display advertising takes a far back seat to media planning and buying.

At the core of it, this lack of love stems from the high costs of creative production, particularly because marketers and media folks aren’t able to produce enough creatives to match the scope of what could be done.

In my experience, there’s no shortage of copy or concepts to run epic display ad campaigns. Marketers would like to use a test and learn mentality with display, but due to the costs and time involved in creative production, only a single or a few campaign concepts can actually get created. It’s online advertising in 2014 and we’re stuck in a plan and execute mode.
